Besides its picturesque lakes, this region has moorlands, wildflowers, quaint villages and meadows that inspired Beatrix Potter to create a popular literary bunny.

Meander over the moors and mountains of the Lake District, an 885-square-mile (2,292-square-kilometer) region in northwest England. Walking, cycling and enjoying the many lakes are among the popular activities that local residents and visitors participate in year round. UNESCO includes this region on its world heritage list, recognizing how nature and humans have created a lovely area where “mountains are mirrored in the lakes.”

As you might expect, the area’s lakes are top attractions. Rent a boat, from kayak to motorized vessel, for activities on Coniston, Derwent, Ullswater or Windermere lakes. Climb aboard a steamer for a tranquil cruise or enjoy stunning views over the coastline while in Lake District National Park.

Hike or bike along the park’s 1,900 miles (3,060 kilometers) of right-of-ways reserved for outdoor exercise. Local experts provide guided walks past wildflowers over gentle terrain or up steep slopes, sharing information on nature, history and conservation.

Helvellyn, one of the park’s tallest peaks, has multiple approaches requiring varied skill levels. Follow the 48 trails designed without stiles for easy access by those in wheelchairs or with strollers. Hike to Aira Force, with waterfalls and a conifer arboretum. William Wordsworth memorialized this spot in poem.

Visit the World of Beatrix Potter in Bowness-on-Windermere to see Peter Rabbit and other characters from the imagination of this classical children’s author. The Lakes Aquarium near Windermere is another great spot for kids of all ages.

The dark skies of the Lake District are perfect for pursuing astronomy, with Ennerdale and Wasdale having some of the darkest and best locations. Join a stargazing event at Grizedale Forest to use telescopes for even better views. Check the schedule of the International Space Station and find a spot with views above the tree line to have a toast under the path of this very bright satellite as it passes overhead.

Travel by car to the Lake District in about 4.5 hours from London or 1.5 hours from the airports of Leeds, Liverpool or Manchester.
