Where to stay

Puerto Plata's beaches are its top attraction, with no shortage of superb beachfront hotels. The most obvious place to stay is along the Playa Dorada, where most of the big resorts are clustered. In the city of Puerto Plata itself, the best accommodations are those along the Malecón where the beaches are smaller but have lots more local atmosphere. Rooms in the one-time fishing town of Cabarete, a short drive east along the coast, are also worth considering for a more relaxed atmosphere. Sosua, between Puerto Plata and Cabarete, has good hotel deals but caution is advised in the evening.

Numerous activities are offered around Puerto Plata, ranging from zip lining and hiking to horseback riding and shopping. Almost every high-end resort will organize trips to the famous 27 Charcos (Damajaqua Cascades), a set of magnificent falls just inland. For independent exploration, choose a place to stay near the Puerto Plata Cable Car, which carries visitors to the top of Mount Isabel de Torres, where spectacular views and a botanical garden await. Those more interested in teeing off than trekking should choose accommodations near Playa Dorada Golf Club, which is also close to beaches.

Dive shops are scattered along the Playa Dorada, making this a top place to stay for those wanting luxurious accommodations, great beach access, and plenty of chances to explore beneath the waves. Catamaran and sailing tours also run up the coast from here to the postcard-perfect island Key Paradise. There are great villas and apartments to the north in Costambar, ideal for those staying a little longer, plus a coral reef offshore. Even those who choose accommodations in the center of Puerto Plata will find that many companies offer pick-ups for excursions including deep-sea fishing and snorkeling.
